Kaylee Thompson finally made her varsity cross country debut for the Lady Centurions at the Santa Clarita Valley Invitational. The results were impressive, as Saugus’ top five runners of the day gapped just 42 seconds. They won by just 10 points over Bishop Amat, ranked top 15 in the overall state rankings, but that was without top runner Mariah Castillo. Insert Castillo’s 18:02 junior varsity solo win and Saugus wins by a landslide (29-65!). It’s obvious they mean business, as the program aims for unprecedented 10th consecutive state championship in seven weeks. With the addition of Thompson this team could accomplish great things, starting with this Thursday’s second Foothill League Meet. A team has only perfect scored the league on three different occasions (in 2007, when the Saugus girls went 1-5 at finals, and in 2008, when they went 1-6 at Foothill League Meet No. 2 and a historic 1-7 at the finals). This Thursday could become the fourth time… |

The Indians have a great 1-2 punch in Anely Avila and Sophia Pearson but have some work to do after. Both Avila and Pearson took on Palos Verdes’ best over a very difficult two-mile layout at the Palos Verdes Invitational. Avila lost to PV’s No. 2 runner by four seconds, while Pearson clocked 12:49 against several team’s best runner. |

Had three girls break 20 minutes on Woodward Park’s 5,000-meter course at the Clovis Invitational, led by two spectacular performances by freshmen Sophia Hoelzel and Shelbi Schauble. Hoelzel’s 19:15 and Schauble’s 19:37 now rank No. 16 and No. 25 on Santa Clarita’s all-time high school freshman list. Stephany Estrada also joined the duo under 20 minutes, clocking 19:57 at Clovis. |
